VIU Centre for Sturgeon Studies to open October 3rd

After accommodating about 120 sturgeon researchers in July this summer (4th WSCS-NAC sturgeon Conference, WSCS Board meeting and General Assembly), Vancouver Island University is envisaging the next sturgeon event sincce the Centre for Sturgeon Studies is about to be opened by October 3rd 2011. The 1,208-square-metre facility will provide the new home for staff and students from the biology and the fisheries and aquaculture departments as well as guest scientists. It provides the opprtunity to work in five "wet" labs, with rearing tanks, and a "dry" lab. Support for the new centre came from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, B.C. Knowledge Development Fund, Island Coast Economic Trust, Marine Harvest Canada.

Just in time to finalize the centre for the event, Western Economic Diversification Canada, announced an additional funding of approx. $700,000 this month. With this background, VIU is well equipped for the future, hosting ISS7 in July 2013.
