Dear Word Fish Migration Day colleagues,
We would like to share specially with our WFMD present and past participants this important news beforehand. Tomorrow on July 28th at 00:01 European Central Time we will be releasing the first-ever Living Planet Index for Migratory Freshwater Fish (please note that the link won’t be activated until 00:01 CEST of July 28th but we wanted to let you know before it goes public in a few hours, see attached press released with embargo until July 28th CEST).
Although it is not a surprise for many of you, the figures are shocking. The findings within the report confirm that migratory freshwater fish may be more threatened throughout their range than previously documented. Globally, these populations have declined by 76% on average since 1970. In Europe, populations have declined by 93% and in the Caribbean and Latin America, populations have declined by 84%.
As a global community, we work together to protect and care for these species and our work continues to remain a priority. This is the moment to spread this message and work towards global solutions.
