LIFE-Boat4Sturgeon: Europe’s first floating sturgeon hatchery opens on the Danube in Vienna.
On April 10th, the new LIFE-Boat4Sturgeon hatchery opened. The former sediment transporter MS Negrelli was transformed into a state-of-the-art hatchery and has 35 basins fed with Danube water. This facility provides the space to hold mature broodstock and juveniles reared for release of the four remaining Danube sturgeon species. By 2030, 1.6 million juvenile sturgeons are expected to be raised within the project and released into the Danube and tributaries, protecting the last four Danube sturgeon species from extinction.
