Conference at the EU Parliament
On the initiative of MEP Mrs. Carmen Avram, MEP, Member of the Committee on Fisheries (PECH), a conference was held in the European Parliament on the theme “Saving the last EU dinosaur: the sturgeon”, to which the WSCS (P. Bronzi) was invited for a technical presentation that would shed light on the status of sturgeon populations in Europe and in the world, their sustainable use and the urgent needs for their conservation. The conference was also attended by Mr. Alvaro Amaro, MEP, Chair of the Intergroup on Biodiversity, Hunting and Country Side, Mr. Michal Wiezik, MEP, Member of the committee on the Environment, Public health and Food Safety (ENVI), Mr. Nicola Notaro, DG ENV, Head of Nature Protection Unit. An other technical presentation was made by Mr. Peter Gammeltoft, Chair, Danube Sturgeon Task Force, titled “EU legal and political committments to sturgeon conservation and their implementation”. Cristina Sandu, International Association for Danube Research, had the opportunity to present an intervention focused on sturgeons in Danube and Black Sea in the hearing “Challenges and opportunities for fishing sector in the Black Sea”.
