The LIFE RESTORE project has been officially approved under the EU LIFE Programme, aiming to safeguard the critically endangered Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii). Led by the University of Padova, the initiative will release over 71,000 sturgeons, most of which will be of considerable size (3+ and 2+ years old), into 13 rivers within their historical range, covering 45 Natura 2000 sites. The project integrates advanced genetic management, habitat restoration, and invasive species control to enhance survival rates. Additionally, LIFE RESTORE will implement an unprecedented monitoring plan, combining advanced telemetry and citizen science to track the species’ movements and survival. A large-scale public awareness campaign will also engage over 200,000 people. With a strong scientific foundation and broad stakeholder involvement, LIFE RESTORE aligns with the Pan-European Sturgeon Action Plan and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030, setting a new benchmark for conservation efforts.
