Paddling the Danube for Sturgeon Conservation

Bob Kreiken has been fascinated by the Danube for as long as he can remember. When he learned that the Danube is one of the last sturgeon strongholds in Europe, his fascination turned to concern. Sturgeon populations in European rivers have been decimated by dam construction, illegal poaching, and climate change-induced droughts. Without immediate conservation action, losing the last sturgeon in Europe seems to be just a matter of time.

In the name of citizen science, Bob is kayaking the Danube from the North to the Black Sea to raise funds for sturgeon conservation. His kayak is outfitted with an Innovasea VR2Tx receiver to track any tagged sturgeon along the way. You can follow Bob’s progress on Instagram or donate via his website.
